Soft shackles are amazingly light and exceptionally strong.  It is truly amazing how strong a small piece of rope can be.

    Hypothesis:

Soft Shackle made from 3/8″ Amsteel with a button knot should break at roughly 100kN.

    Materials:

    • 1 x Soft Shackle
    • Certified Break Test Machine

    Procedure:

Break test Method – Secure the soft shackle to be tested using.  A constantly increasing force will be applied at roughly 10,000 lbs/minute until the webbing fails.

    [/fusion_text][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=””]

    Test Results

    TEST BREAKING POINT
    Test 1 – 3/8″ Soft Shackle  99.6 kN (22,400 lbs)

    [/fusion_table][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=””]

    Analysis:

The break test went exactly as expected.  The soft shackle broke at 99kN, almost exactly at the expected breaking strength of roughly 145% of the Amsteel MBS.  The break occurred in the eye and left one end fused to the other which was likely caused by the intense heat of the break test and the extreme loads.

    Conclusion:

The strength of soft shackles made of 3/8″ Amsteel so far exceeds any forces that would be applied during slacklining and given the weight, why not use something this strong.  Soft shackles are amazing tools, lightweight, extremely strong and very versatile.  A must-have in any slackers gearbox.

There a many different ways to secure your slackline webbing.  A common method is to use a static lock created by passing a bite of webbing through a closed loop and securing it.  For instructions on static locker methods see the how to single wrap static locker and double wrap static locker.

    Hypothesis:

The strength of webbing in a bend or a bite will be reduced.  The double wrap line locker increases the bend radius and reduced the pitching force in the knot.

    Materials:

    • 4 x 3m pieces of Skypilot Nylon Webbing
    • 4 x 3 1/4 T 5/8″ Steel Shackle
    • Certified Break Test Machine

    Procedure:

Break test Method – Secure the webbing to be tested using the Static Lock Method below.  A constantly increasing force will be applied until the webbing fails.

Test #1 – Control Test – Perform a break test of a piece of webbing with double wrap static locker on both ends.

Test #2 – Control Test 2 – Perform a break test of a piece of webbing with double wrap static locker on both ends.

Test #3 – Single Wrap 3 – Perform a break test of a piece of webbing with double wrap static locker on one ends and a single wrap on the other.

Test #4 – Single Wrap 4 – Perform a break test of a piece of webbing with double wrap static locker on one ends and a single wrap on the other.

    Single Wrap Break Test Read-out

    Analysis:

Control Tests – As expected the ‘control tests’ webbing broke inside the double wrapped static locker at about 80% of the webbing MBS.

Single Wrap Tests – As expected the webbing secured using a single wrap method broke inside the single wrap at roughly 70% the webbing MBS.

    Conclusion:

A double-wrapped static locker retains more of the webbing’s breaking strength at roughly 80% whereas the single-wrapped method retains 70%.  There are other methods of securing the webbing that retains more of the webbing strength.  More test will be performed on other lock-off methods.

Slackline webbing can be damaged from any number of ways.  It is important to understand the impact that damage may have the strength of the webbing.  Does one cut thread cause the webbing to be compromised?

    Hypothesis:

The strength comes from the weave and the strands in the webbing.  Minor damage with nearly 100% of the threads and weave still intact, the strength should not be significantly affected.  Major damage to the webbing such as cut threads of broke weave will significantly compromise the strength.

    Materials:

    • 4 x 3m pieces of Skypilot Nylon Webbing
    • 4 x 3 1/4 T 5/8″ Steel Shackle
    • Certified Break Test Machine

    Procedure:

Break test Method – Secure the webbing to be tested using the Static Lock Method below.  A constantly increasing force will be applied at roughly 2500lbs/minute until the webbing fails.

Static Lock Method – Double Wrapped Lock off using 2 rated shackles.  The same method was used on both ends of the webbing in every test

Test #1 – Control Test – Performed a break test of an undamaged piece of webbing to establish a control point.

Test #2 – Minor Damage Test – Repeat the test with a piece of webbing that was damaged by pulling some threads out using Velcro.

Test #3 – Major Damage – Repeat the test with a piece of webbing cut 1/5 of the width of the webbing using a knife

Test #4 – Extreme Damage – Repeat the test with a piece of webbing cut 1/3 of the width of the webbing using a knife

    Extreme Damage Break Test Read-out

    Analysis:

Control Test – As expected the ‘control tests’ webbing broke inside the double wrapped static locker at about 80% of the webbing MBS.

Minor Damage Test – With all the webbing strands still intact, the minorly damaged webbing broke inside the double wrap static locker well away from the damaged section.  There seems to be no significant decrease in webbing strength when compared to the control test.

Major Damage Test – With roughly 1/5 of the webbing strands severed, the webbing broke at the damaged point at 60% of the webbing MBS and roughly 70% of the control test break loads.  The damaged webbing remained in good condition up to the point when it broke.

Extreme Damage Test – With roughly 1/3 of the webbing strands severed, the webbing broke at the damaged point at 53% of the webbing MBS and roughly 64% of the control test break loads.  The damaged webbing remained in good condition up to the point when it broke.

    Conclusion:

Minor damage to slackline webbing does not appear to significantly reduce its strength.  With webbing is good condition, it is more likely to break inside the static locker than at some point in the middle of the webbing.

As Expected more serious damage to webbing does dramatically reduce its strength.  It was surprising that even with an extreme cut in the webbing, it still held loads exceeding 12kN, which in a normal situation, should be far above any force applied to the system.

Only a single test of each variation was performed.  Additional tests are required to better understand the impact of damage on slackline webbing.   Webbing should be inspected prior to every use and retired if any major damage is discovered.  Never use damaged gear or equipment because it is not possible to predict how it might perform.

Sewn loops on the end of your slackline webbing can make rigging the static side nice and easy.  Simply attach the main loop to your rated anchor using a rated connection, clip off the backup loop, and done.

Sewn loops provide an easy connection point that maintains more than 90% of the webbing’s breaking strength.

    Sewn Loop Configuration

You can see from the sewn loop configuration above, to avoid applying additional lateral stress on the ‘main’ loop stitches, it is important to load the ‘main’ loop rather than the ‘Backup’ loop.

    Summary:

After having performed several break tests, we have not found any of SlacklifeBC 1/4″ soft shackle to break less than 50kN.   In all tests, the soft shackle fails at, in or around the eye loop.   Watch the video below to see the soft shackle break a break test machine

    1 Set of Results:

    • Breaking Point:  58 kN (13,050 lbs)
    • Load Type:  Gradual (~145 lbs/s)
    • Test Duration:  1min 38sec
    • Failure Point:  Eye loop
