  • Sky Pilot Alpine Highline – “The Wingman”

    SlackLifeBC was formed with the vision of combining skills to tackle some high alpine highlines. One of our first big mountain climbing objectives was Sky Pilot Mountain. This mountain is no joke, 2031m high with many risks and some technical areas.

    Taking the last gondola up at 9:45pm on Friday, we hiked into the dark. Waking up surrounded by mountains, within close striking distance to Sky Pilot summit, we packed up and started for the peak.

    After gaining the summit (2031m), the mission began. We spent some time exploring around the peak and the gendarme looking for a nice, easily protected, level location to set up the highline. Rigging off a big horn, we quickly had the first Sky Pilot highline — “The Wingman”.

    After a few walks, we returned back to camp for a well deserved pasta dinner. After dinner, with a few hours of light, we decided to go bag Copilot Mountain, said to be a simple scramble to the top.

    Leaving the ropes and harnesses at camp, we set out for the peak. After some short loose scrambling, we realized we should have brought the ropes. Good thing we packed our helmets because this 4 pitch shooting gallery of a gully climb saw quite a few small rocks fly by. We scrambled our way up and made the summit. Having a quick drink of water, none of us could relax with the down climb in the back of our mind. After a tense 20 mins, made better by some singing “On the Cover of the Rolling Stone”, we were back at camp joking about the climb.

    On Sunday, we returned to Sky Pilot for some more highlining before heading home after another amazing weekend in beautiful British Columbia.

    The construction of the new Sea To Sky Gondola has made access to the mountain much easier. This is a good and bad thing. For us, the easy access greatly reduced the distance we had to haul gear, but the same easy access may have contributed to the many accidents that happened on this mountain in 2014, by opening up a serious mountain to those who may not be fully prepared.

    2nd Annual Assault On the Chief – Squamish highline festival

    Building from the first annual Assault on The Chief, Squamish highline festival, 2014 promised to be bigger and badder with people from all around the world.

    The weekend was a huge success with people traveling from Calgary, Montreal, Colorado, Oregon, Washington and Texas.  With 5 lines rigged across the North and North-North gullies, there were lines for people of all skills.

    The days were spent crushing the lines high on the chief while the evenings we gathered around a fire in a group camping location, sharing stories over cold beers.

    “Deez Nuts”, 15m long and 200m high, across a notch in the North North Gully of the Squamish Chief.  This epic location is great for slackers of all levels who want to come out and play high in the air.  Short enough beginner can walk, but high enough to scare the pants off most people, “Deez Nuts” is always a great place to hangout, enjoy the views and meet the local wildlife

    Extreme Rope Swing: Daredevil Celebrates Successful Slackline Crossing With Incredible Rope Swing

    A CANADIAN slackliner celebrates a successful crossing without safety equipment – by going for a SWING. Vancouver-based Spencer Seabrooke tried a few practice runs over the North Gully of Stawamus Chief Mountain in Squamish, British Columbia. The 25-year-old then removed his safety harness in order to attempt a “free solo” crossing over the 200m drop. After a couple of failures, the daredevil – who is a veteran of more than 200 highline walks – made it across on his third try. And with a successful crossing safely in the bag, the slack lining enthusiast returned to the same spot the following day for an adrenaline-fuelled swing through the gully.

  • North Gully FreeSolo – “Dean’s Line”

    Having previously setup both the “Original North Gully” and “Dean’s Line” over the summer, and having free-soloed the “Original Line” – (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFuUulXS_Ck), Spencer vowed to return to free-solo “Dean’s Line”.

    “Dean’s Line” got its name from legendary highliner, climber Dean Potter, who first free-soloed this line while being featured on National Geographic “The Man Who Can Fly”.     On October 12, 2013, Spencer Seabrooke was the second person to FREE SOLO “Dean’s Line”, the 100ft Slackline, 900ft high across the the Squamish Chief North Gully.
